Shri Surajit Mitra, IAS, Joint Secretary, Department of Heavy Industry, Govt. of India is a Director on the Board of HMT Limited. Prior to his tenure in the Department of Heavy Industry, Shri Surajit Mitra has held the posts of Joint Secretary for ESCAP, ASEAN in the Ministry of Commerce, Joint Secretary & Financial Adviser in the Ministry of Petroleum, and Principal Secretary, Planning & Development, Government of Assam.Dr Surajit Mitra has a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Cambridge UK.Dr Surajit Mitra has wide experience spread across various Ministries / Departments of the Government Of India viz Ministries of Rural Development, Tourism, Communication, Defence, Home, Commerce, Petroleum and North East Development while his work experience spans departments of Tourism, Culture, Home, Rural Development, Mines & Minerals, Social Welfare, Industry, Education, Revenue and Rehabilitation in State Governments.

The Administrative and Academic recognitions received by Dr. Mitra include:

  • Fellow of Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford(International Trade) during the year 1998-99.
  • Hon. Professor in the centre for Policy Research (South-South Cooperation) during the year 1998.

    As Joint Secretary in the Department of Heavy Industry he is involved in initiating policies for effective management and the monitoring of the various PSE’s under his charge.
